Exercise Is A Necessary Evil

“Don’t get mad at me, but you need to get some exercise.”

That’s what my psychiatrist said the other day. It’s the first time I’ve ever heard a doctor preface an important statement by telling me not to get mad. My personal doctor told me to lose weight and exercise last year. She got mad at me. She made me WANT to lose weight. The “shrink” asks politely. You gotta love it!

I have been more intentional in getting outside and walking, bicycling, or playing with my children. Sometimes I tie in an errand like walking to the post office or the bank. Living in a small town makes it easy to run these types of errands. Yesterday I went for a brief walk after 7 P.M. It was a lovely time of day with a temperature just right for walking.

I tried to talk my wife into letting me buy an iPod the other day. I have a digital recorder that allows a modicum of music mp3 files. Having an iPod would make a walk fun. I’ll make do for now. An idea I have is to rip this CD to my digital recorder. I can keep the Small Catechism fresh and enjoy Luther hymns while I walk!

I wasn’t mad at the psychiatrist for telling me I need to exercise. I know I do. My laziness makes it hard. It’s time to kick laziness in the behind and move around!
